Who
are the winners and losers in the electronic
relocation of business functions across
the globe? As computerization has permeated
all sectors of the economy and almost
every business function, the definition
of the traditional workplace is changing
profoundly. These changes are breaking
down the traditional dimensions of time
and space that define what is, or is
not, a 'firm', a 'workplace' or a 'job'.
Regional development and urban space
is becoming more fluid as work becomes footloose.
EMERGENCE
Canada is a Canadian Government SSHRC-funded
project through Industry Canada's, Initiative
on the New Economy program that
investigates the impact that information
and communications technologies have
on the changing nature of work in the
new economy. In particular it investigates
outsourcing of telemediated employment
or 'e-work' between firms within Canada
and between Canada and the rest of
the world.
